All of the resistance that they had encountered in the largest of the three buildings had come from the men patrolling the corridor. As they had suspected, these were the guys in charge of security. The element of surprise had been on Knox’s side but the guards had still put up a pretty good fight. They obviously had a lot to hide. Knox’s team, all in full combat armour, had sustained only a few injuries, but the thermal image showed that a number of the guards were down permanently. Better them than my guys, thought Knox, but he still felt bad for the men he had sent in; there were always consequences when lives were lost. These guys would be running over various scenarios for days, maybe weeks, in which they hadn’t come out so lucky. Knox remembered it from his own time in the field — the hours in solitude wondering what would have happened if you had fired a second later; moved a fraction slower; been the first one through the door rather than the fifth. It was all too real.

Knox looked up as Franklin pushed the door to the control room open and stuck his head round.

‘Have I missed it?’ Franklin asked.

Knox waved him in. Part of the team had just kicked open the fire escape door on the middle building and there was someone hurtling straight towards them.

‘Single incoming hostile, Bravo Team. He’s heading straight for you at pace,’ the operator in front of Knox spoke calmly to the team leader who had just burst through the door. A single shot was fired, flaring the camera image from the team leader’s helmet. The lead man from Bravo team responded with a single shot, and they heard a scream as the man went down.

‘Got him,’ came the equally calm reply. Sure enough the thermal image showed that the man had hit the ground and was trying to wriggle away from them. Franklin stepped up beside Knox and watched as the assault team surrounded the man and pinned him to the ground. Knox looked at Franklin.

‘I didn’t think you’d want to miss this, looks like your guys were spot on.’ He grinned at Franklin, pleased with the way the operation had gone. Franklin looked a little preoccupied.

‘I hope they’ve left some suspects alive to interview,’ said Franklin, looking at the image of the man writhing on the floor. Knox turned back to the screens.

‘You’ve rounded up everyone who’s moving, boys. Now get into the rooms and see what we’ve got there. Keep your guard up; any of them could be a hostile. There’s not a lot of movement though, so I’m guessing we have some sleepers.’

Knox had only ever raided one site involved with people trafficking before. The victims in that case had all been kept in a catatonic state with a cocktail of drugs and none of them had been able to remember how or when they had arrived there or where they were supposed to be going.
